FMA Washington Report: May 11, 2020
Public Service Recognition Week 2020
Last week, May 3-9, was Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW); a week set aside to honor and promote the work you, and all civil servants, do every day. While the Federal Employee Education and Assistance Fund (FEEA) was unable to stage the annual Public Service 5K Walk/Run, and other events were regrettably cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the federal community came together to celebrate virtually across the country.

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on PSRW that read, “this Public Service Recognition Week, we are especially grateful to our devoted public servants.  Their experience, expertise, and commitment to service will lift our Nation up during these difficult times and help ensure a swift recovery.  We will forever be indebted to them for their hard work, dedication, and courage, always remembering their irreplaceable contributions to our people and our country.” You can read the full proclamation by clicking here

Additionally, legislators in both the House and the Senate offered bipartisan resolutions in recognition of PSRW, as well. The House bill was offered by Reps. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) and Rob Wittman (R-VA), while the Senate bill was introduced by Sen. Kirsten Sinema (D-AZ), Sen. James Lankford (R-OK), Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI), Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE), Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH).

Finally, CNN’s Anderson Cooper and best-selling author Michael Lewis hosted a livestream event to look at the work of the finalists for the 2020 Service to America Medals (the Sammies).

As FMA National President Craig Carter wrote to all FMA members, “I am grateful for your dedication to the nation and the Federal Managers Association, and hope you have a happy and safe PSRW!” We are hopeful next year’s PSRW will not be impacted to the extent this year’s event was, and we appreciate your efforts year round!
