    Owing IRS could cost federal workers jobs

    Legislation introduced to the House by Representative Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) calls for federal employees who are seriously delinquent with paying federal taxes to be terminated and would prohibit the federal government from employing anyone with such debts. While federal employees as a collective owe more than $3.4 billion in income taxes, Representative Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) noted in a hearing last year that compliance with tax law in higher among federal employees than private sector employees. In a letter to elected officials, the Federal Managers Association (FMA) noted that terminating delinquent federal employees would make it difficult to collect debts, "The unemployed hardly make for very good taxpayers.”
