  • ALAN KENT NAMED 2016 FMA MANAGER OF THE YEAR - March 21, 2017
  • Alexandria, VA - The Federal Managers Association (FMA) is proud to announce Mr. Alan Kent as the winner of FMA's Manager of the Year award. He has served as President of FMA Chapter 99, Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Keyport, (NUWC Keyport) Washington, and currently serves as Technical Director at NUWC Keyport.

The Federal Managers Association strives to promote excellence in public service and during FMA's 79th annual National Convention and Management Training Seminar, member Alan Kent of FMA Chapter 99 Naval Undersea Warfare Center Keyport, Washington, was named Manager of the Year, as he best exemplifies the Association's mission. A two-time finalist for Manager of the Year, Kent joined FMA when he first became a supervisor at NUWC Keyport. He has contributed to FMA as Chapter President, is heavily engaged in recruitment to the association, and is personally involved with contributions to Chapter 99's NUWC scholarship fund, conferences, fundraising, and FMA's Memorandum of Understanding with NUWC Keyport.

Professionally, Mr. Kent is responsible for managing NUWC Keyport's diverse portfolio including test and evaluation, in-service engineering, maintenance  and repair, fleet support and industrial base support for undersea warfare systems, undersea weapon systems, countermeasures, and sonar systems. Mr. Kent is responsible for operations at a number of geographically dispersed facilities located throughout the United States. Among his workplace accomplishments, Mr. Kent organized and conducted NUWC Keyport's initial Internal Program, and successfully led an initiative to instill an improved culture of procedural compliance within torpedo maintenance personnel. He also led the successful delivery of many Navy and Department of Defense products that are directly utilized by the Warfighter. Mr, Kent provides Command-level support for NUWC Keyport's Health, Hobbies, and Heritage Day, and supports Keyport's Industry Day, where he showcases the accomplishments and opportunities at the facility.

Renee Johnson, FMA's national president, praised Mr. Kent, saying, "Alan Kent embodies everything FMA stands for and represents, including his leadership of the Board of Directors at NUWC Keyport, within Chapter 99, and in his local community." She added, "As a finalist for Manager of the Year last year, and the winner this year, he demonstrates consistent and steady leadership, garnering respect from his superiors, peers, and subordinates. FMA is grateful for all that Mr. Kent does, and I am proud to announce him as FMA's 2016 Federal Manager of the Year."

The FMA Manager of the Year award is presented annually to an outstanding manager or supervisor in the federal government who is a member of the Federal Managers Association. Chapters may nominate one member to their respective Region Director, and that officer submits the name of the nominee and supporting documentation for consideration of the award. The selection committee reviews three categories in determining the winner:

    • Workplace accomplishments/contributions
    • FMA involvement at the chapter, region or national level
    • Local community accomplishments/contributions

The other finalist for the 2016 FMA Manager of the Year award considered by the selection committee was:

    • Ms. Vickie Jolley - FMA Chapter 21, Fleet Readiness Center East, Cherry Point, North Carolina

Johnson concluded, "I am gratified by the tremendous leadership acumen shown by all members of FMA, which we saw on display at this year's national convention. In these complex and uncertain times, it should give us all a measure of comfort that FMA, and the federal government as a whole, is represented by Manager of the Year Alan Kent and other managers like him."
