  • FMA URGES SUPPORT FOR PAID PARENTAL LEAVE FOR FEDS - February 13, 2017
  • The Federal Managers Association (FMA) joined 23 other organizations in the Federal-Postal Coalition calling for the passage of the Federal Employees Paid Parental Leave Act of 2017 (H.R. 1022). The bipartisan legislation, offered by Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-VA), would provide federal employees six weeks of paid leave in connection with the birth, adoption or foster placement of a child.

In the letter of support prior to its introduction, the coalition wrote, "This policy is long overdue. The United States is the only developed country in the world that does not require paid parental leave for its civil servants. In the United States, more private-sector employers are voluntarily recognizing the value of this policy. The federal government should join those private-sector leaders, and every other developed nation."

The legislation has 44 original cosponsors and has been referred to both the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and the Committee on House Administration. FMA also supports companion legislation, S. 362, introduced by Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI).
