  • On Tuesday, January 31, Rep. Derek Kilmer (D-WA) introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that would exempt shipyards from the federal civilian hiring freeze President Trump enacted. Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI) introduced companion legislation in the U.S. Senate. FMA is grateful for the leadership of Rep. Kilmer and Sen. Schatz, endorses these bills, and urges their swift passage.

    Lawmakers push to exempt shipyards from Trump’s hiring freeze

    Legislation introduced Tuesday in Congress would exempt shipyards, including the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, from a new federal hiring freeze.

    The freeze ordered last week by President Trump does allow hiring for some positions considered essential to national security. But sponsors of the bill say it is unclear whether that would include the shipyard jobs.
