- Brinksmanship Returns ahead of Deadline for Funding Agencies - September 11, 2024

Congress returned this week from its summer recess facing a fast-arriving deadline to keep federal agencies funded beyond the September 30 end of the current fiscal year, only to quickly return to the kind of brinksmanship that often has threatened—and sometimes has resulted in—a partial government shutdown.
With only several of the needed regular appropriations bills having passed the House, and none having passed the Senate, focus has turned to a stopgap measure called a continuing resolution. However, the same partisan differences over funding levels and policy matters that stalled those measures quickly arose as the House Republican leadership produced its version of the stopgap measure for voting as soon as this week.
