Obama extends pay freeze until Congress passes a budget
By Kellie Lunney, Government Executive
In a letter to members of the House and Senate, President Barack Obama stated he seeks to increase federal employees' pay by 0.5 percent, but only when Congress passes a budget. House and Senate leaders have already agreed to draft a six-month continuing resolution in lieu of a budget, which effectively means the earliest federal workers could see a raise would be April 2013.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time federal employees have come under the gun when it comes to finding a budget solution. Previously, Federal Managers Association National President Patricia Niehaus stated regarding extensions of the pay freeze, "Federal workers are responsible for protecting our borders, providing care for our veterans, and assisting our troops abroad. Yet they are unfairly painted as scapegoats for the nation’s deficit and budget crisis. At a time when more is being asked of our government, the American public deserves an engaged and efficient workforce; not one that is painted as the source of our country’s economic problems."
