- Shutdown Negotiations Between Trump and Democrats Break Down Before StartingBy Eric Katz, Government ExecutiveNegotiations between President Trump and congressional Democrats over funding the government past Dec. 8 broke down before they even began on Tuesday, with leaders of the minority party backing out of a meeting at the White House that they said was just for show.The White House had scheduled a meeting for Tuesday afternoon with the president; Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.; Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.; House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis.; and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. Trump tweeted on Tuesday morning that “Chuck and Nancy” wanted “illegal immigrants flooding into our country unchecked” and to “substantially raise taxes.” He added he therefore did not “see a deal” on “keeping government open and working.”To read more, please click here.
